Have you spent hours sunbathing (using a high-SPF sunscreen, of course) to get that bronzed look of your dreams? Don’t want to lose that sun-kissed look in a couple of days? We’ve got five tried-and-tested tips for you to make your tan last for as long as possible. What to avoid and what to buy

If you love having a tan and don’t want to give it up, even when you know that tans are no longer in fashion, we’ve got five trusty tricks for you to stop that bronzed look from fading. Here are our tips for making your tan last!

 1. Exfoliation is the right way

How to make your beautiful beach tan last and last Start your treatment by exfoliating. Although it might seem that scrubbing and frequent showering would rob you of that luscious colour, this is not the case. Massage your entire body with a gentle, abrasive body scrub in the shower, ideally once or twice a week. Immediately after exfoliating, apply a moisturiser. It’s just not worth waiting around with this.

If you want to keep the tan on your face, don’t use a body scrub on it. Get yourself a special facial scrub. Body scrubs have coarser particles that are no good for the delicate skin on your face. Also, make sure that the water in the shower or bath is not too hot. Some studies have shown that hot baths are the most common cause of dry skin, disrupting the top layer. And a tan fades more easily when you have dry skin.

2. Moisturising and aftersun treatments

Don’t underestimate the choice of nourishing aftersun products, whether it’s a quality moisturiser or an oil. These really caress sun-stressed skin. They are best used at night, so that they have time to work. Some experts recommend a tan-enhancing cream with walnut extracts to promote tanning, whilst others recommend oils with sea buckthorn.

In the office we tried out moisturising products and discovered they can work similar miracles and nourish the skin deeply. They are best used immediately after showering and then several times a day. Hydrated skin stays tanned for longer; you know that already.

3. A tan in a tube

When we were trying to figure out in the office how to make our tans last, self-tanning products turned out to be a good option. Most of them are suitable for face and body. If you are one of those people with more sensitive skin, we recommend using self-tanning face creams directly, and applying them to dry skin once a week to support your tan.

The same treatment applies to self-tan creams for the body. You don’t need to use heavy makeup in the summer. Support your tan with a more lightweight tinted moisturiser for the face and select one according to your current skin tone. Don’t be afraid to use a highlighting bronzer – brush under the cheekbones, but also lightly on the décolletage.

As for dietary supplements, beta-carotene is good to use for a month after sunbathing. The usual dosage is one capsule of beta-carotene per day.

4. Hydrate!

The skin’s ability to retain water is affected by regular care and, of course, having sufficient fluids. Coconut water from young coconuts is a great help, and balances the pH level of the skin. It contains cytokines and lauric acid, two elements that the body needs in the process of cell growth. They have an anti-ageing effect.

As far as products with coconut extracts go, they are used in beauty products for their moisturising, regenerating and soothing effects. So feel free to look for after-sun body care on a similar basis.

 5. Artificial sun has a stop sign

If you’re lucky enough to have spent the summer on the beach instead of in the office, avoid sunbeds when you get home (and generally throughout the year). Although tanned skin is better at absorbing UV rays, which are more intense on a sunbed than outdoors, the risk of skin cancer increases and you can end up with dry skin. And this also leads to premature skin ageing. Ageing? We don’t want that!

So our final advice is this: exfoliate once a week, moisturise several times a day, shower only in lukewarm water, and buy a subtle self-tanner and a cool bronzer! Now you know how to make your tan last!
