Styling short hair is a challenge. Trying to achieve a natural-looking hold. Trying to keep its shine but without looking greasy. What’s the solution? In short, it’s styling or modelling hair paste, which is now no longer just the preserve of men, but also represents a great answer to the question of how to style short hair for women too!

Styling hair pastes for everyone

Short hair can be appealing because of its apparent ease of maintenance, but in reality, few truly manage it. Emma Watson is one that can. At the time, Miley Cyrus also looked great with a ‘pixie mullet’ for her Gucci perfume campaign. Zoe Kravitz and Michelle Williams are also brilliant at stylish short hair. And when you look at Chris Hemsworth’s Insta, you can see how awesome men’s hair can look when paste is used.

It’s just that in order to look divine, you don’t just need to know how to care for your short hair, but how to style it properly too – and styling pastes have reigned supreme in this respect for some time now! They first represented a great way to style men’s hair. But these days, gender matters much less. If you have short hair (up to a pixie cut or a shorter, more casual bob), then you too can definitely make use of hair paste. Why?

Which is the best hair paste for you?

7 reasons why you’ll fall in love with hair pastes:

  1. They are suitable for all hair types, even super-fine hair. They are actually water-based, so they don’t weigh down individual strands (hair doesn’t become limp).
  2. And since modelling pastes are water-based, they are easy to wash out.
  3. They keep straight hair in place without creating a helmet look or feeling crusty to the touch, which can often be the case with hairspray. Styling pastes give curls texture and guide them naturally in a certain direction.
  4. Besides medium strong hold (provided by natural beeswax, corn or bamboo proteins), they also deliver volume.
  5. The inclusion of a small amount of oils ensures that hair remains nourished.
  6. After application, they don’t leave any kind of ‘tinge’ on your hair; styling pastes don’t remove colour or add any greyness, such as you might have experienced with low-quality dry shampoos.
  7. You can also opt for those which leave hair with a natural shine without creating an overly greasy look, or go straight for a matt hair paste which creates an almost silky soft look to the surface of your hair.

What is modelling hair clay?

In addition to styling pastes, you can also use styling clay for short hair. This is clay-based, meaning it delivers mineral ingredients to your hair. It’s completely natural, offering stronger hold than a paste!

Make playfulness the priority

What stylish pastes give you is playfulness. You can change your hairstyle throughout the day. Any time you like. Applying them is so straightforward.

How to style short hair using a hair paste

  • Ideally, your hair needs to be dry.
  • Open the tub of paste and, to begin with, grab a bit of paste equivalent to the size of an almond or half a walnut with the tip of your index finger. If you’ve opted for the spray form, start with one good squeeze of the dispenser. The more paste you use, the stronger the hold, but the goal is often to keep a certain amount of airiness in your style. For fine hair in particular, start with a small amount and gradually add more.
  • Modelling paste can often start off quite solid. So just slowly spread some across one palm, then bring your hands together and rub them as if you were trying to keep warm. The paste will soften with the warmth, so you'll have an equal amount on each palm.
  • Next, run your whole palm over your hair and draw the paste out along your hair, from the roots to the ends, and as your fingers weave in and out of your hair, style it into your desired look. As soon as the paste loses the heat from your palms, it will set once more – fixing the volume and shape of your hair naturally.

Have you chosen one yet? Of course, feel free to take a look at the reviews of the hair paste you’ve gone for. Nothing beats real-life user experiences! But to be honest, you really can’t go wrong. When it comes to styling, hair pastes are a universal helper!
