Toothpaste for spots, coconut oil instead of cream, or lemons to brighten your skin. These are some examples of advice you should definitely not be following. We’ve put together the top 10 to give you the most beautiful year ever!

Social media is full of supposedly revolutionary developments and tips on how to care for your skin, body and hair. Unfortunately, a lot of these “great ideas” end up on the scrapheap of history. However, we have years of tried and tested tips which actually work!

1. SPF is number one

Yes, we say it all the time. But unless you’re slathering factor 50 on your face every day (whether it’s sunny or dark and dreary), other attempts at a beauty regime will just be in vain and you will never achieve the kind of results you would get if you used a daily cream with SPF.

2. Don’t shower your face in hot water

We know it feels great. But it’s not good for your skin at all. Unfortunately. Hot water dries out your skin unnecessarily and removes the oils it needs. So if you don’t want red, dry, itchy skin, turn your back on hot water.

3. Clean brush, clean skin

Hand on heart. When was the last time you washed your makeup brush properly? You can’t remember? Well then, it’s high time. You really don’t want to be using a dirty brush full of bacteria on your face. That’s why you should wash your brush at least once a week. To wash it you can use a gentle shampoo, gall soap or a special brush cleaner.

4. Wash your pillow

If you sleep lying on your back and perfectly still, then congratulations, you don’t need to keep reading. If your favourite sleeping position is on your side or front, then you’re rubbing your face in hair product remnants, creams and dead skin cells. Doesn’t sound great, does it? So wash your pillow cover at least twice a week.

5. Always blow-dry your hair

But that damages your hair! Not true. Of course you should use heat protection, but if you don’t blow-dry your hair with a high-quality hairdryer, at least at the roots, your scalp will suffer; it might steam and issues such as itching and dandruff could arise.

The best tools

6. Don’t touch your face

A dirty brush, a dirty pillow and now – dirty hands. Your hands don’t belong near your face. Do you prop your chin up with you hand while you read emails? Or do you inspect those massive pores with your fingers in the harsh light of the lift? Stop. When you need to do something to your face, wash your hands thoroughly and use a tissue. Otherwise try not to touch your face. And avoid your child’s hands even more.

7. Stick your finger in your mouth

Do you love bold lipsticksand take care with the appearance and colour of your lips? Sound like you? Then I’m sure at some point you’ve experienced getting lipstick on your teeth. Well, to avoid it, try this simple trick. Put your finger into your mouth, press your lips round it and then pull it out. Any excess lipstick will come off on your finger and won’t get stuck to your teeth.

8. Minimal arsenal

Beauty comes from within, but when you’re not quite yourself, you need a little help. Unify your skin with a BB or CC cream, tweak your eyebrows, add some blusher, do a bit of tweezing and bring it together with a great mascara. Try it and watch how your mood changes!

9. Heading to the beauty salon? Yes, but...

Cosmetic treatments are full of benefits, and not just for your skin. They smooth, firm, brighten and hydrate, all while you relax. Sounds ideal. But if you don’t have your own systematically developed morning and evening cosmetic routine, visiting a beauty salon once every six weeks won’t do too much for you. So don’t forget about your trusty home beauty routine and enjoy cosmetic treatments as a nice extra.

10. Run out of shaving foam? Use conditioner

Everyone knows that. Do you need to shave your legs for a date or evening out and you can’t even get a drop of shaving foam out of the bottle? Don’t chuck your razor in the bin. Reach for the conditioner. Its texture helps your razor or blades glide nicely over your skin and facilitates a smooth shave.
