Wedding makeup and hairstyle are definitely things you should have perfectly planned for your D-day. They have to be able to withstand tears of emotion, sultry weather and wild dance routines that often go on into the morning. Makeup artist Marta Rajohnson has answered the most common questions. And she's even got tips for you on how to put on your own makeup for a wedding, if you dare.
Among brides, a natural style is still preferred: subtly highlighted eyes, gentle pink blusher and an inconspicuous lipstick. "Red lipstick is popular too, but mostly among brides getting married in winter," says makeup artist Marta Rajohnson. Don't stick to current trends at any cost. It's okay to go for a makeup style you are used to that makes you feel confident and at ease. If you like yourself with smokey eyeshadow, feel free to have it for your wedding.
Brides often feel at a loss as to whether to choose shiny or matte makeup. After all, social networks are full of shiny and glittery ones now. Martha has a clear answer to this: "If you're having a summer wedding, chances are it's going to be really hot. That's why it's better to go for a more matte foundation and eyeshadow, and definitely don't go overboard with the highlighter, otherwise you could look too shiny on your photos."
Tip: The lipstick needs to be long-lasting. Otherwise, not only your new husband, but also all of your guests could get an imprint when congratulating you. And after the ceremony, you won't have any left on your lips.
"Loose waves and hair tied lightly at the back, hairstyles with braids, and a simple bun at the bottom – these wedding hairstyles are definitely the most popular," says the makeup artist. Because of the popular "clean girl look", more and more brides opt for a minimalist, very smooth bun. It can withstand hot summer weather, unlike loose hair with waves which will go straight or even frizzy as the big day unfolds.
Tip: If you know your hair won't last perfectly curled for long, talk to your makeup artist about clip-on extensions. They'll stay wavy for a really long time and help your hair maintain the desired texture. Plus, they'll thicken your hairstyle beautifully.
How about hair accessories? Live flowers still lead the way. Arrange for your florist to prepare a few extra flowers and your makeup artist will work them into your hairstyle just the way you want it. Pearl hair clips, rhinestone embellishments or tasteful artificial flowers also look beautiful in your hair. Make sure you take your hair accessories with you to your makeup artist for a trial run. You can try out several and then decide which ones are right for you.
● When is the right time to book a bridal makeup artist? Most clients open a booking about a year in advance. The earlier the better certainly applies here. The best ones are already booked up months before the wedding season starts. You could opt for an untraditional wedding on a week day when not only makeup artists, but also other wedding suppliers are far less busy.
● When should you go to the hairdresser before your wedding? Definitely go for a tint and cut before your makeup artist's appointment. Don't change your hairstyle just before the wedding. The final look may not be the same as the rehearsal.
● How should you take care of your skin before the wedding? Definitely avoid new procedures to which your skin may react negatively. So just hydrate, hydrate and hydrate! And go on with your daily routine.
● How does the wedding makeup and hairstyle rehearsal work? The bride comes to her makeup artist with specific pictures and together they discuss what would look best on her.
