Are you still faithful to your standard toothbrush, or have you already switched to an electric one? We’ve tried several sonic toothbrushes and tested their brushing technique as well as user comfort.

These products promise an easy and effective brushing, much more thorough plaque removal, and some of them even intuitive use. The latest models also feature a clever brushing technique with varying intensities and interesting design.

We’ve tested toothbrushes designed for people who have gum problems or sensitive teeth. So what are their benefits? The subtle vibrations of a sonic toothbrush are very gentle on your teeth and gums – plus you can select a lower brushing intensity.

Curaprox – Black is White – sonic electric toothbrush with whitening effect

  • 3 brushing modes – start, clean, smile
  • Bristles with activated charcoal – remove staining from teeth
  • The packaging contains: 2 brush heads, USB charger, travel case

What did I like the most? You’ll instantly notice the minimalist black packaging and the clever design of the toothbrush itself. The entire body including the brush head is slim, with the brush head being also unusually small. When you turn the device on, the indicator of battery charge and brushing mode will light up with a beautiful magenta colour which makes this toothbrush even more stylish.

Benefits: The size of the brush head and the slim neck of the toothbrush allow you to get into every nook and cranny with natural ease.  The toothbrush also promises that the activated charcoal particles int he bristles will restore the natural whiteness of your teeth – but obviously I did not expect my teeth to be actually whitened. My teeth don’t even have a naturally white colour, so I wasn’t asking for any miracles. However I also did not expect a visible removal of subtle stains from coffee, cigarettes and red wine, which is exactly what happened. All in all I love this toothbrush – it looks great and does what it promises.

Downsides: At first I felt a bit suspicious about the size of the brush head and the fact that this device only has three brushing modes. Luckily I was proven wrong the moment I used it.

FOREO – Issa™ 3 – silicone sonic toothbrush

  • 16 intensity settings
  • Smart Memory mode – remembers your preferred settings
  • 360° brushing – 3 concentric ridges on the back to clean the tongue and cheeks
  • The packaging contains: toothbrush, USB charger

What did I like best? The pink colour immediately caught my eye! Also the silicone bristles. And I love how long the battery lasts.

Benefits: Silicone bristles massage your gums, which feels really nice. The bristles are made of hypoallergenic silicone, so they won’t harbour bacteria. The centre of the brush head has polymer bristles which clean your teeth perfectly. The toothbrush is easy to turn on and off, it charges through USB (and a full charge lasts an incredible 365 days!), plus it’s waterproof. It’s not heavy and doesn’t take up much space – something I particularly appreciate as I like to travel! I also enjoy the fact that every 30 seconds the toothbrush lets you know you should move onto another area of your mouth. The Smart Memory function remembers which of the 16 intensities I prefer. The brush head lasts up to 6 months, so I haven’t purchased a replacement yet.

Downsides: I already have FOREO facial cleansing device and love using it, so I pretty much knew that this toothbrush would be fantastic. That said, I was a bit sceptical about the silicone bristles – but luckily they turned out to be great. Their brushing effect is incredible.  Some might find the price a bit steep, but healthy teeth and gums are so important and they’re worth the expense.

Oral B Pro3 3500 Cross Action Black – electric toothbrush with a case

  • 3 brushing settings – everyday brushing, gentle and whitening
  • Pressure sensor – alerts you when you’re pressing too hard
  • 2-minute timer – alerts you every 30 seconds that you should move onto another quadrant of your mouth
  • The packaging contains: 1 brush head, charging station, travel case

What I loved the most: Handy packaging, ease of use, affordable price.

Benefits: I really like this toothbrush. I’ve never experienced such an amazing feeling of perfectly clean teeth. It’s also very easy to use. I’d recommend it to anyone who wants to try an electric toothbrush and doesn’t require a dozen different functions or app connectivity.

Once you start brushing your teeth, your toothbrush will vibrate every 30 seconds to tell you that you need to move onto another section. This is something I really appreciate because it allows me to brush all of my teeth within the recommended time. The toothbrush also has a pressure sensor, so it lights up and slows down the pulsations when I put too much pressure on my gums. This prevents me from pressing down too hard.
I mostly used the Daily Clean mode. Apart from the toothbrush and one brush head, the packaging also includes a charger that won’t take up too much space in your bathroom. It also comes with a travel case that will serve as perfect storage and protect your device from damage.

Downsides: No app connectivity.

Oral B Pulsonic Slim Luxe 4500 Matte Black – sonic toothbrush

  • 3 brushing settings – everyday brushing, gentle and whitening
  • 2-minute timer – alerts you every 30 seconds that you need to move onto another quadrant of your mouth
  • Ultra slim and very light
  • The packaging contains: 2 brush heads, charger, travel case

What I like the most: The simple settings, timer, longevity on one charge, lightweight and beautiful design, amazing grip.

Benefits: When it comes to the process of brushing, I like how simple the settings are. Oral B offers 3 brushing modes – everyday brushing, gentle mode and polishing mode. I like particularly the gentle mode for careful brushing that doesn’t irritate sensitive gums. I also appreciate the built-in timer. The device gives you two types of sound alert – a short intermittent sound and a long intermittent sound. The short sound alerts you every 30 seconds that you should move onto another quadrant of your mouth for a uniform cleaning effect. The long sound tells you the recommended 2 minutes of brushing are up.

The toothbrush comes with a replacement head, charger and travel case. If you’re constantly on the go like I am, you’ll love how long it lasts on one charge. This means that you can throw it in the travel case, leave the charger at home and go on a weekend trip. I also fell in love with the overall design of the brush.

Downsides: None that I found. I’d say the Oral B Pulsonic Slim Luxe 4500 toothbrush is simple and effective. Honestly I can’t imagine going back to a standard toothbrush. This one makes brushing easy and always gives me brilliant results. Definitely worth the price.

Oral B iO 9 electric toothbrush

  • 7 brushing modes – gentle, super gentle, gum care, tongue cleaning, everyday brushing, whitening, intense cleaning
  • AI Tracking with 3D – artificial intelligence scans the surface of your teeth to ensure perfect cleaning
  • Pressure sensor – alerts you when you’re pressing too hard
  • The packaging contains: 1 brush head, magnetic charger, travel case

What did I like the most? Elegant design, travel case, many settings to choose from, gentle brushing for sensitive teeth and gums. And I absolutely love the app!

Benefits: The microvibrations make toothbrushing gentle and painless. This toothbrush comes with a charger and a case for replacement brush heads, so me and my boyfriend can travel with only one toothbrush and swap the heads. The Oral-B app was the most pleasant surprise. It made every brushing more fun – and it even convinces you to brush your teeth in the evening when you don’t feel like it. The AI Tracking allows me to scan the surface of my teeth in real time and brush them thoroughly without spending too little time on some areas. The app also tracks how much pressure you apply, allows you to make a note of any gum bleeding or set a reminder for brush head replacement. The brush has a display where you can see elapsed time of brushing, plus a light ring that turns green when you’re applying the right amount of pressure on your toothbrush.

Downsides: I’ve had problems with sensitive gums for years so I was worried the toothbrush would be too rough for me. But I was surprised with the number of different settings including a very gentle mode that turned out to be just right. So no complaints here!
