Grey hairs are kind of like wrinkles. When they start to appear, you might be surprised and a little annoyed. You can either accept the first grey hairs and not deal with them, or you can go for subtle camouflage. In either case, though, hair care is of the utmost importance. And besides, we’ve got tips for you to perfectly cover up grey hair in seconds.

You’re probably asking yourself the fundamental question: Why does hair start to have a silvery tinge and lose its natural colour? The explanation is simple – it loses its natural pigment due to reduced melanin production. When and how quickly your hair turns grey depends mostly on your genetic predisposition. However, smoking, hormonal changes and long-term stress can also trigger the growth of grey hair. So naturally grey hair at a young age is really not that unusual.

Not Yet!

There are plenty of ways to try to delay or minimise the onset of greying hair.

  • Healthy diet. Focus on vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. And quit smoking! This will support the overall health of your hair (and not just your hair).
  • Get stress under control. Chronic stress is a very pronounced trigger of greying hair. Try meditation, yoga, breathing exercises, relax, indulge in your hobbies and jump into therapy.
  • Protect your crowning glory. Wear headgear, use hair sprays with UV protection, limit highlights, perms and straightening.
  • Sufficient hydration. Drink plenty of water so that there is enough left for your hair and scalp. It’s the only way your hair won’t get dry, brittle and maybe even grey.

Care for Grey Hair

Grey hair tends to be drier and coarser, so it needs a bit more care. Whether you’re masking it (healthy grey hair is easier to camouflage) or embracing it, use hydrating shampoos, masks and hair oils. Ideally, look for argan, coconut, jojoba oil, keratin and glycerine in the ingredients. And for summer, definitely get a spray or oil with UV protection. With these four new products, you’re all set.

Tip: Food supplements can also help to improve the condition of your grey hair (and not only your hair). Collagen and biotin support hair health and can slow down the greying process. Omega-3 fatty acids improve elasticity and hydration. Vitamin B, iron and zinc strengthen the hair structure.

If you’re going for the new ‘silver hair’ look, you shouldn’t miss out on shampoo for grey hair that prevents unwanted yellowish tones. Grey hair is cool, but only when it’s healthy. So try to treat it more gently than you have been doing. A soft, paddle brush with natural bristles will do the trick, and limit blow-drying with hot air. And if there’s no other option, always use heat protection for your hair

How to Cover Grey Hair Without Dyeing

If grey hair is somewhat lowering your self-esteem, learn how to flash mask with us. It’s possible without permanent dye.

  • Dry shampoo. Two birds with one stone. Just get a tinted dry shampoo for your hair. Spray it onto your roots and grey hairs, brush it out and hey presto. Volume, fresh hair and no more grey colour.
  • SOS hair products. Would you prefer a powder to cover your grey hairs, a hair concealer in a pencil or a root touch up spray? Try them all. They will reliably cover grey hair in seconds and you can even layer them as needed.
  • Rescue styling: a few grey hairs or grey roots can be easily disguised with the right hairstyle. Try to give your hair some volume with a good blow-dry. The more your hair moves naturally, the less grey hair is visible. So no hairsprays or hair mousse.

Remember that the first grey hair mustn’t be plucked! As my hairdresser says, ‘You pull one out and another three show up for its funeral.’
