The new trend of skinimalism: just 3 essential steps in skincare

A skincare routine in ten steps? Not my sort of thing. Nevertheless, I feel really bad that I'm skimping on skincare. And I am sure that my complacency caused every pimple and that first wrinkle. In reality, however, the whole thing may be very different. A new trend has come into play: skinimalism.

There are skin emulsions, boosters, mists and masks for different parts of the face in the bathroom, and we are often unsure of their effect or what phase of skincare they belong to. It's just chaos where one important fact has got lost: our skin does a lot of the work on its own. And it's our task to just support it a little in doing so. Skinimalism is here to remind us about that.

A game changer in skincare

Do you approach beauty trends with slight mistrust? No wonder, many social media hits aren't worth fundamental changes in your everyday skincare. But skinimalism, which advises reducing the number of products used to a necessary minimum, makes perfect sense. And it's approved by specialists.

"I teach my clients that the phrase "less is more" applies in beauty too," says Aghni Valášková, who runs her own salon Kosmetička Brno, and explains: "Using lots of products, often inappropriate ones, can easily harm sensitive or damaged skin. And we also can't tell what really helps."

Skin cleansing as the basis

Mission: healthy skin

Skinimalism is about getting back to basics. This means 3 fundamental steps of everyday skincare: cleansing, hydration and UV protection. If you don't suffer from major skin problems, that's all you need. This way you might do with just 3 products. But don't take it literally, it's about attitude, not mathematics. If your skin type or current skin condition calls for something extra, there's no reason to overlook it.

And what might a skinimalist routine look like?

Cleansing

Let's repeat this one more time: skin cleansing in the morning and evening is a must. "Based on my experience, cleansing lotions and foams are the gentlest," recommends the expert. This depends on personal preferences, of course. Some might find cleansing balms or oils a better idea. Step 2 involves a face toner which, according to Aghni Valášková, balances the skin's pH, cleanses it more, and promotes better absorption of active ingredients from subsequent skincare products.

Hydration

It doesn't matter what your skin type is – hydration is always needed. "The trend of skinimalism places the emphasis on hydration, and rightly so. It's the very alpha and omega of anti-ageing care, but acne-prone skin needs it too," says the beautician.

The best skin hydration and UV protection

UV protection

Sun protection really isn't just a holiday thing. The solution can be elegant (and very skinimalist): a day cream with minimum SPF 30+. However, it's a lot better to add SPF in another separate step in this case.

Be a good skinimalist

Skinimalism is simple in its very nature, so don't expect a set of rules here. But one thing is important: the motto "less is more" is slightly modified to "less and more efficient". Loose translation: find products with quality ingredients that actually help your skin. "If you choose effective and gentle products, ideally recommended by a specialist, minimalist care is suitable for all skin types," adds Aghni Valášková.

Skinimalism is the right trend for me. Will you join me in skin care minimisation (at the expense of quantity, not quality)?
