Don't feel like going through the ten-step Korean skincare routine? Then take the best parts of it and make your skin glow and be properly hydrated! That’s what Korean fluids can do. If you haven’t yet had the pleasure, come and learn all about it.

What’s the deal with fluids?

First things first: what actually are these fluids? “They’re liquid cosmetic products, typically with a higher water content,” explains the biochemist and skincare specialist Vendula Ficelová of @biochemicka.vendy. “In Korean skincare they are usually referred to as toners or essences, or we sometimes call them face toners or hydrolates.” So it’s more about the consistency of the product rather than a clearly defined category, and you can look through a variety of sections when choosing them.

The top Korean fluids

Neither a serum nor a cream

Fluids have other specific characteristics that show up in their full glory alongside other products in your skincare arsenal. “Compared with a face serum, fluids have a lower concentration of active substances. Unlike face creams, they are absorbed far more quickly, they have fewer emollient ingredients and most probably you won’t find occlusives in them – these are the oily substances that lubricate the surface of the skin so that it doesn’t lose water,” adds Vendula Ficelová, to make it perfectly clear.

An extra serving of skincare

There are many fluids and each has its own superpower – they can hydrate, exfoliate, soothe or brighten. There are even tinted fluids or versions with SPF. And therein lies their main strength – and the reason for adding them to your beauty kit. They boost your skin in the fight against whatever is currently bothering it the most.

More wonders from Korea that we love

They don’t replace any other product, but, as Vendula Ficelová says, they function as a supplement and an extra step when a regular treatment is not enough. “And since they are lightweight and gentle enough, thanks to the lower concentration of active ingredients, they are suitable for everyone, regardless of age. Especially the hydrating fluids,” explains Vendula.

A moment of glory for the fluids

When layering multiple different products, do you always forget which one to put on your skin first? So do we! We’ve got some good news – it’s easy with fluids. “We apply them to the skin as the first step after cleansing and then continue with the serum and cream,” she advises. Fluids can be part of your morning and evening routines, so you can make the most of them. According to our expert, the exception is exfoliating fluids, which should only be applied in the evening so as not to overdo it when it comes to removing dead cells, thereby damaging the protective skin barrier.

In summer, you can apply a lightweight fluid as a single layer under sun cream, so your skin doesn’t feel too heavy.

More is more

If you’re a bit of a skin maximalist, you could try the popular 7 Skin Method. “This Korean trend is based on applying three to seven layers of face toner or essence for the best results,” explains Vendula. Just beware of exfoliating products. They are not suitable for this purpose.

With Korean fluids you can achieve your dream “glass skin” or “cloudless skin”. And if you’re not into trendy labels, it’s simply an easy way to get glowing, hydrated and even-toned skin. Let’s find the one for you!
