With every new season, we reach for a new shade of lipstick and look out for the most popular colour of nail polish, while even adapting our skincare routine to the latest trends. But what about perfume? The most dramatic move is switching a sweet and fresh fragrance for a bottle with a slightly more intense scent when winter comes around. Can you relate to that? Maybe your fragrance collection needs a little revolution. Meet the most trendy fragrances of 2023.

1. Unisex

Unisex perfumes are nothing new, of course. But the theme of gender identity resonates throughout our society in such a prevalent manner that fragrances that break down boundaries between genders are on the rise. Break away from the typical “masculine” and “feminine” notes and explore woody or aquatic accords instead. It might even be refreshing to share a fragrance with your partner, don’t you think?

2. Fragrance layering

The emphasis is very much on being unique and authentic. But that one perfume from a world-famous advert doesn’t exactly scream originality. What’s the answer? It’s time to try layering. Forget the ancient rule that states that you shouldn’t mix fragrances together. But a little thought doesn’t hurt.

When layering, start with a stronger fragrance and follow with a lighter one, so that it also has a chance to stand out. Combining a bunch of strong fragrances together is not a good idea. Fragrances with at least one ingredient in common will do great together. Floral fragrances are forgiving in this regard, as they get along with almost everything (especially fruity accords). Spicy notes go together with woody and oriental ones. But that’s enough rules; creativity is what matters the most.

3. The scent of sustainability

Another topic that has made its way from the societal level to the universe of fragrance is sustainability. This relates to both the contents and the packaging. Take an interest in where the ingredients of each perfume are sourced and pick bottles that are refillable. Synthetic ingredients and upcycling are becoming more popular, with some companies using leftover parts of spices or wood from other industries. But beware of greenwashing. Don’t settle for claims made on the packaging; sustainability is also about research and data.

4. Unusual ingredients

A new perfume with the same old ingredients. If you’re getting a little bored of rose, sandalwood and bergamot, try experimenting with what may sound like a mad chef’s menu. Rice, sesame, seaweed, pistachio, cannabis; these are what you can smell like. Do you dare to broaden your horizons?

5. Functional fragrances

The purpose of perfume seems to be more than clear: we just want to smell nice (and receive compliments from those around us). But according to new trends, a bottle can change your mood, depending on its composition. Spritz some jasmine or lavender to calm yourself down. Or boost your energy levels with the help of mint and citrus. Make use of the power of perfumes to the fullest.

6. New vanilla

Ode to the ’90s. Vanilla is the scent of nostalgia, accompanied by comfort and warmth. It’s not too sweet, but rather sweetly sexy, and goes well with other “edible” accords such as cocoa, berries or citrus fruits. You may think of it more as a winter scent, but there’s no need to wait, it’s a good choice all year round. 2023 is simply the year of vanilla.

7. Nude fragrances

Nude perfumes should feel like a light negligee or second skin. They are delicate, clean, airy and powdery, with accords of rose, musk, amber or cashmere. And the best thing about them is that they smell different on each of us. According to experts, they symbolise our desire for closeness and intimacy. They send a clear signal: if you like the light breeze, you have to come closer to get to know what it’s all about. For inspiration, head over to TikTok and search the hashtag #pheromoneperfume.
